What Is a Subframe and When Does It Need Replacing?
The subframe — also called an engine cradle, K-frame, or suspension crossmember — is the structural chassis component that supports the engine, transmission, and front or rear suspension. Every suspension mounting point, steering rack, and engine/transmission mount connects to it. When a subframe is damaged by collision impact, rust, or corrosion, the entire front or rear geometry of the vehicle is compromised — affecting steering, alignment, and handling stability.
New OEM subframe pricing from dealers routinely reaches $700–$2,400+ depending on the platform, making collision-damaged vehicles economically unrepairable when new parts are the only option. Used OEM subframes at GreenGears Auto cost $160–$680 — original factory assembly, exact OEM tolerances, at 50–72% below new dealer cost.
🔩 Structural Integrity Checked
Every subframe is inspected for bending, cracks, collision distortion, and stripped or damaged mounting points before listing. No structurally compromised units enter our inventory.
📋 Mileage Documented
Donor vehicle mileage is verified and recorded on every listing. Most of our subframes come from accident-damaged low-mileage donors — structurally intact vehicles whose sheet metal, not drivetrain, sustained the damage.
🚚 Free US Shipping
All subframes and crossmembers ship free within the US. Processing 1–3 business days, transit 3–7 business days after dispatch. No freight surcharges on structural parts.
Popular Subframe Applications We Stock
Honda Accord, CR-V & Civic Front Subframes
The most available and most affordable used OEM subframe category in the market. Honda's large US sales volume means we have consistent supply of front subframes and engine cradles for Accord (2003–2022), CR-V (2002–2022), and Civic (2006–2021) from documented low-mileage accident donors. FWD and AWD variants stocked — confirm your drivetrain when ordering.
Toyota Camry, RAV4 & 4Runner Subframes
Toyota's corrosion-resistant coating produces some of the cleanest used subframes available. We stock front and rear subframes for Camry (1997–2022), RAV4 (2001–2022), and 4Runner (2003–present). Toyota's engineering consistency across model years also means strong cross-year compatibility on many applications.
Nissan Armada, Pathfinder & Frontier Subframes
Rear subframes and crossmembers for Nissan's full-size truck-based SUV and pickup lineup. The 2004–2015 Armada and Pathfinder rear subframe is one of our most consistently requested listings — confirm 2WD vs. 4WD variant before ordering as they differ structurally.
Ford Fusion, Escape & Explorer Subframes
Front subframes and engine cradles for Ford's high-volume car and crossover platforms. The Ford Escape (2013–2019) front subframe is available in both FWD and AWD configurations — these are not interchangeable. Ford Fusion (2010–2020) front subframes are among the most affordable in our inventory.
Chevrolet Equinox, Malibu & Silverado Subframes
Front subframes for GM's compact and mid-size car and crossover platforms, plus engine cradles for Silverado and Sierra trucks. Equinox (2010–2017) and Malibu (2013–2016) front subframes are well-stocked from GM's large accident-donor fleet.
Volkswagen & Audi MQB Platform Subframes
Front subframes and rear axle carriers for VW Tiguan (2015–2021), Golf, Jetta, and Audi A3/Q3. MQB platform used OEM subframes save $600–$1,200 vs. new dealer pricing — making otherwise uneconomical European platform repairs fully viable.
Subaru Outback, Forester & Legacy Rear Subframes
Rear subframes for Subaru's AWD lineup. The AWD rear subframe carries the rear differential mounting points — always confirm AWD vs. FWD configuration as these are structurally different assemblies.

Critical Fitment Checks Before Ordering
Subframes and crossmembers vary within the same model year based on drivetrain, engine, and trim configuration. Getting the wrong one means misaligned mounting points and a repair that can't be completed. Always confirm:
-
FWD vs. AWD: AWD subframes carry additional differential mounting points and driveshaft clearance cutouts — not present on FWD versions of the same model
-
Front vs. rear: Many vehicles use different subframe designs front and rear — always specify which end you need
-
Engine variant: Different engine options sometimes use different engine cradle designs to accommodate different mounting bolt patterns
-
Model year production run: Mid-cycle refreshes sometimes update subframe geometry — provide your full VIN for the most accurate match
⚠️ Always Perform a 4-Wheel Alignment After Subframe Replacement
Any subframe or engine cradle replacement shifts suspension geometry — even when reinstalled carefully to OEM torque specs. A post-installation 4-wheel alignment is mandatory to restore correct caster, camber, and toe settings. Skipping the alignment causes rapid tyre wear and unstable handling regardless of how precisely the subframe was fitted.
🔧 Replace Subframe Mounting Bushings at Installation
Subframe mounting bushings — the rubber isolators that attach the subframe to the vehicle body — typically cost $40–$80 for a full set and should always be replaced when installing a used subframe. Original bushings that have been in service for years are hardened and cracked, and will transmit noise and vibration through the new subframe from day one.
